Michael Jackson dies of Cardiac Arrest at 50

I have just received news from a few friends that Michael Jackson has died of a cardiac arrest at the age of 50.

I have just been watching Sky News and BBC News live and it has been confirmed that Michael Jackson has died. He was taken to hospital in a coma, but he did not make it.

I am so shocked. I wonder who is going to take care of his three children now.

RIP Michael.

Quick lunch ideas - Croissants with cheese and mushrooms

If you are looking for a recipe idea for a quick and light lunch, I have put together one of my ideas. I usually like to eat a light lunch because a heavy lunch tends to make me tired and want to sleep.

This is also a good substitute if you are bored of eating sandwiches. You can have it hot or cold, but I prefer my cheese mild and melted....yummy!

If you like croissants like I do, then you will enjoy this croissant lunch idea. You can accompany this with some fruits and juice or water.

You can also take this to work with you, but remember to put it in the fridge.

Here is what you will need:

Ingredients

  • 2 Large Croissants
  • Leerdammer cheese or any hard cheese of your choice grated or sliced like cheddar, mozarella etc
  • 2- 3 washed and sliced closed cup mushrooms or any other mushrooms you have
  • Schwartz mixed herbs or whatever equivalent you have

Leerdammer cheese slices

Washed and sliced mushrooms

Directions
  1. Using a knife, cut a line through the front of the croissants and add a slice of the leerdammer or add grated cheese to fill the croissants.
  2. Add the mushroom slices in a row over the cheese.
  3. Sprinkle mixed herbs lightly over the mushrooms.
  4. Put in the microwave for 1 minute on medium and heat until cheese is melted and mushrooms look soft. Add more time if the mushrooms are not soft enough.

This is step 1...

Step 2 and 3

Finished Croissants with cheese and mushroom

Cheese, mushroom and tomato croissants

Note
: You can substitute mushrooms for sliced tomatoes or add tomatoes as well as in the picture above.

If you are interested in making your own croissants, I found some videos on youtube for recipes and step by step instructions on making your own croissants.

Diabetes Awareness Week 14-20 June 2009

Well, I am a little bit late with the information, but it is Diabetes week between the 14th - 20th of June 2009. The primary goal is to raise awareness about diabetes particularly if you are at risk of becoming diabetic.

There are a number of activities taking place to inform and educate as well as raise funds for a possible cure. There are a number of ways in which you can participate and find out more about diabetes and the things you can do to stay healthy and lessen your chances of becoming affected by it. See the external links at the foot of this post.

In the meantime, I have put together some basic information about diabetes below...

What is Diabetes?

It is a disorder brought about when the body produces little or no insulin to control the body's blood sugar levels, as a result treatment is mainly dependent on injecting insulin to control blood sugar levels in the body in type 1 diabetes or in the case of type 2, a controlled diet and/or drugs to help the body to produce insulin, which regulates the amount of sugar in the blood.

What causes it?

It develops when the body is not producing enough Insulin, which helps to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood.

Understanding and Managing Diabetes DVD

What are the symptoms to look for?

The symptoms of diabetes are:
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Wanting to go to the toilet often or passing excess urine
  • Extreme or constant tiredness or fatigue
  • Itching around the genitals due to yeast infection caused by excess sugar in the urine (although this is not confined to diabetes as other ailments or certain sexually transmitted diseases could give you itching in the genitals)
  • Blurred Vision - Diabetes or high blood sugar tends to affect the eyes
  • Unexpected weight loss (more common in type 1 diabetes)

Ways to avoid or reduce the risk of Diabetes

Watch your weight - eating healthy can help to reduce the chances of developing diabetes

Drink less alcohol

Diabetes is hereditary (can be inherited from parents or chances of it running in the family becomes higher if one or more of your parents or other family members have have it).

Tangle Teezer - An excellent product for removing tangles from the hair

I have just received a complimentary Tangle Teezer in the post this morning and I had to get online to write about it. I just had a shower and got dressed but I hadn't yet combed my hair when the doorbell rang so it was excellent timing for me to try it out while my hair was messy in order to be able to give an accurate evaluation.

The Tangle Teezer is a product which was designed to help the user to get rid of tangles in the hair. It is best used by holding it firmly to the scalp and then combing through the hair.

I find that when my hair is growing I tend to get a very itchy scalp, so the Tangle Teezer is excellent for a scalp massage or scratching the scalp to relieve the itchy feeling. I guess I can just sit here for half an hour running it through my hair, because it feels that good. I have naturally curly or spirally hair that is prone to tangling. I relax my hair and at the moment I have about one inch of new growth of curly hair at the roots and the Tangle Teezer glides effortlessly through the hair. As I type I am using it to brush/comb the hair as I am going to wear the hair in a ponytail today.

If you have relaxed or texturised hair with new growth, you will know how it can be tricky with the hair in two phases and the breakage that can occur where the the curly or wavy hair meets with the straight hair. The Tangle Teezer is great for gently brushing or combing the hair and it has been easy to put the hair into a silky smooth looking ponytail with minimal breakage or hair loss. Two main things to note are it does not pull out your hair and it does not hurt while you brush or comb your hair with it.

If you look closely at the teeth on the Tangle Teezer, there appears to be two lengths, some long some short, I guess this is the secret to the Tangle Teezer's ease of detangling for the hair.

The Tangle Teezer has a very comfortable ergonomic design, which is easy to hold firmly in your left or right hand. Additionally, you can separate the top and bottom of the brush and use the Tangle Teezer to store little things like hair bands and hair clips, which will make it easier for you to find them.

It comes in a variety of colours. I have the pink one, but it comes in black and I know that there is a limited edition purple colour available as well as some new colours and a new range specifically for children just launching.

The Tangle Teezer reminds me of the Avon hair washing brush from the eighties which my mother used to use to wash our curly hair when we were kids, it was a cream coloured brush you could slot your hand into and use in the bath to wash your hair and was excellent for detangling really curly hair, they obviously stopped making it, but this brush appears to be the reincarnation of that hair washing brush.

More pictures of the Tangle Teezer from different angles...

Once I try it in the bath/shower I will add additional commentary.

I can vaguely recall seeing an episode of Dragons' Den where the inventor of this brush, Shaun Pulfrey was trying to secure some funding from the Dragons but failed and I can laugh as I hear the echo of the voices of the Dragons telling him that he should try elsewhere. It just goes to show that even the Dragons get it wrong sometimes.

Made in the UK, the Tangle Teezer retails for about £10.

Update 8th August 2009

Last week-end I had my niece (who is under 10) overnight and after getting her ready in the morning I used the Tangle Teezer to comb and brush her hair, which is in it's natural curly state. She has thick spirally hair, just like mine in it's natural state. I looked in the bathroom for a big comb for afro hair and then I immediately decided to use the Tangle Teezer as I thought it would be excellent to try it out on her hair. Well, I am glad to say her hair was brushed and styled in a neat and cute bunch without any tears or crying. As I brushed her hair, I kept asking her if it hurt and she just said "nope, nope".

When her mum came to pick her up she was very impressed at how neat her daughter's hair was looking. So, this brush is excellent for natural hair and definitely for kids. My niece has told me that she wants a pink one or purple...LOL

I have relaxed hair and in my original post above, I said that I would try using the Tangle Teezer when washing my hair. Unfortunately, I chickened out and I think I will stick to using it on my hair when it is dry, but I think it would be good for natural hair when washing as natural hair is stronger than chemically processed hair.

Sensodyne Pronamel Toothpaste - Good for teeth whitening

On one of the rare occasions when I watch TV, I saw an advertisement for Sensodyne Pronamel Toothpaste. When I was a teenager I had problems with sensitivity and shocks in my teeth particularly when I ate anything cold and chewed ice, which was one of my favourite things after I finished a cold drink. I first tried Sensodyne toothpaste when I was about 14 or 15 years old. Once my teeth or nerves were less sensitive I stopped using the toothpaste and reverted back to Macleans which we used to use back then. Unfortunately, Macleans toothpaste makes the inside of my mouth peel so I personally stopped using it, although it is good in it's own way, but not for me. By the way Sensodyne and Macleans are manufactured by the same company.

I have tried a number of toothpastes over the years and I decided I do not like toothpaste containing baking soda as I cannot stand the tart taste and it makes my mouth feel funny, of course some people like toothpaste that contains baking soda and that is fine.

Anyway, for a number of years now I have been using and still use the Aloe dent aloe vera toothpaste, which my friend recommended and she has extremely white teeth. I use all 3 types tooth whitening, sensitive and original. I use all 3 of them alternatively and I like them very much. You can buy them in health food shops.

A few months ago, while shopping in Sainsbury's I decided to try out the Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste. The toothpaste has a little taste that I do not particularly like too much, but when used with the Aloe dent toothpaste it tastes a lot better, you get used to the taste, which I put down possibly to the Sodium Saccharin that the Sensodyne Pronamel contains. I put a pea sized amount of both toothpastes on either side of my vibrating toothbrush. In terms of sensitivity, I still have sensitivity from time to time but nothing major.

Picture of my teeth

Well, I am glad to say that I have never had any fillings in my mouth, I am proud of this as I have a very sweet tooth. In the meantime, the Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste as well as my Aloe dent toothpaste have very good tooth whitening properties and I recommend them both. I have added a picture to show how white the teeth look. The picture was taken 5th June. I do not smoke by the way but I do drink tea a number of times in a week.

Lush Brazened Honey Face Mask - Ideal for oily and combination skin types

I was passing through Victoria train station earlier this week and while I was power walking my way to the platform where I was to catch my train, I was given a free lime and oyster card holder, for some reason as I was thinking about the lime I walked passed the Lush cosmetics shop on my right and I made a mental note to pop in on my way back...

I popped into the Lush shop to see which products they had for oily skin with no chemicals added. The lady I spoke to showed me a number of masks, in particular the brazened honey face mask, which she applied to the back of my hand for a few minutes and then washed off.

This mask is yellowy green in colour and you can smell the honey as soon as you open the jar. It also contains turmeric, a well known spice used in asian cooking but also excellent for problem skin, acne, spots etc.

Lush Brazened Honey Face Mask
- Inside the pot

The Lush Brazened Honey Face Mask contains ground almonds which is great for exfoliating dead skin cells and giving the skin a smooth appearance by polishing the skin. The honey in the mask is supposed to moisturise and leave the skin feeling vibrant and revitalised, honey is well known for its health benefits and moisturising and healing properties. The mask also contains fresh lime juice to help brighten the skin. Citrus fruits such as lemon and lime are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant containing skin brightening properties. The mask also contains kaolin, which is clay or mud-like and its purpose is to absorb excess oil on the skin. The mask also contains a number of herbs and spices to detoxify and liven up the complexion such as rosemary, sage, fennel, ginger, parsley, coriander and free range eggs, there are other natural ingredients, but I just picked out a few to list. The mask has a very strong smell, but this should be expected from anything containing a number of herbs, spices and essential oils.

As a result of the fresh ingredients the mask has to be stored in the fridge. At the bottom of the tub it tells you the date it was made, has a picture of who made it, mine was made by a lady named Alina and a use by date. It has approximately 26 days shelf life.

Using the mask

The Lush brazened honey face mask is not only a mask but a face scrub as well due to the almond shells it contains which can be used to exfoliate and smooth the skin. However, I would say that if you have a few spots on your face or acne in particular that you should only use this as a face mask not a scrub to avoid irritating skin that is already inflamed.

I scooped some of the face mask out of the tub and put it on the back of my hand. I then applied the mask to my face and immediately felt a tingling feeling or sensation on my face, I was beginning to feel that I shouldn't have used it, but the tingling disappeared after a few minutes. This tingling sensation appears to be common in a lot of face masks as I had the same thing happen when I used another body and face mask from Boots about a week ago. This is probably down to the acidic nature of the face masks to balance the pH of the skin.

Anyway, the mask is extremely thick when you apply it and I had a little trouble smoothing it all over my face so I added a few drops of water from the cold tap to the scoop I had on the back of my hand to make it a little less thick, this made it easier to apply to my face.

When washing off the mask from my hands, I decided to use the remaining mask on my hands to exfoliate the skin on my hands and the area around my nails in order to get rid of any dead skin.

I decided to use it only as a mask on this occasion and after leaving it on my face for about 15 minutes while it dried and then I washed it off. You can use a facial cloth or flannel to loosen the mask from the skin by wetting the face flannel under the hot tap and then applying it to your face, leaving it on for a few seconds pat gently with the palms of your hands to give your face a mini steam and repeat twice or until the mask softens. You can then use the flannel to gently remove the mask or just use your fingers to gently rinse it all off.

Your skin should feel refreshed, look brighter and feel smoother and soft.

The mask is excellent for oily skin helping to lessen the appearance of oil on the skin by drawing out impurities and toxins. It cost me £4.84 for a 74g tub/pot.

I just saw a sticker on the side of the pot, if you take 5 empty face mask pots back to Lush cosmetics for recycling you get a face mask free.

NB: If you are using a white face cloth or flannel to take this mask off your face it will get stained yellow, this is most probably because of the turmeric. I know because my white flannel has now turned yellow...LOL

Off topic

I just read that turmeric can also be used to deter ants, this is probably due to its bitter or peppery flavour. I am going to try this out as the ants keep coming inside! I used lemon juice to wipe down the surfaces a few days ago and this worked for a day or two but they are back again....LOL

Aphrodite hair conditioning cap review

I bought the Aphrodite Hair conditioning cap at the Afro Hair and Beauty show about a week ago. I tried it out for the first time yesterday.

After inspecting the cap, it is more of a bonnet and you would put it over your head after you first put on a plastic cap to cover your hair.
It has a plug and needs to be plugged to the mains. It then has a hand operated switch that you can use to switch the conditioning cap on or off. There is a little instruction booklet and guarantee slip inside the box.

I would say that the hair conditioning cap is pretty easy to use. It has 3 heat settings.

The first time you use it it takes a little while to get going and I was sitting for some time waiting for it to heat up. It does get very warm, but in comparison to my hair steamer I would say that it does not get very hot.

However, it does heat up enough to deep condition the hair allowing the hair to be conditioned and treated especially if your hair is dry, brittle or damaged.

Once you have applied your hair conditioning treatment or oil to your hair you would cover it with a plastic shower cap or carrier bag if you do not have a shower cap, then you would put the conditioning cap over this. The Aphrodite conditioning cap is more of a bonnet and sits over your head easily. You also have a drawstring type cord hanging down around your neck and chin area which you can adjust in order to tighten the cap around your head.

On the box it says that the Aphrodite hair conditioning cap....
  • Stimulates the scalp
  • Promotes healthy hair growth
  • Ideal for semi permanent hair colours
  • Speeds up perms
  • Great for treatments & conditioners
  • Ideal for all hair types
There is a control or thermostat-like device which has a little adjustable disc on the side which can be used to change the heat settings to 1, 2 or 3.

Aphrodite Hair Conditioning Cap

Once you switch it on, it does not make any noises or sounds, so the only way you can tell that it is working is by looking at the hand control device which illuminates with a red light once you have turned the little disc on the side, additionally it heats up eventually and is very quiet compared to a hair dryer or steamer.

It does not automatically switch itself off because it does not have a timer that you can set as a steamer or standing hairdryer does, but once you sit under it for about 15-25 minutes, this should be sufficient time for the conditioner to have penetrated the hair.

The Aphrodite hair conditioning cap is an excellent item for mobile hairdressers or it is a handy little pouch to take away with you when travelling for hair conditioning while you are away.

Aphrodite conditioning cap

How is a heat conditioning cap different from a hair steamer?

A hair steamer uses moisture to hydrate the hair but a heat conditioning cap just allows the hair to soak whatever conditioners are applied to the hair by adding heat to the hair, which in turns opens up the cuticles or the hair shaft to allow the hair conditioner to enter the hair in order to make it softer, more manageable and less frizzy and dry.

I would say that the conditioning cap is a good item for heat conditioning your hair and is worth the £30 that I paid for it, however, I do not know how long it will last.

Some pictures of my hair

Well, I have been blogging for some time now and I realise that some people who regularly read this blog would like to see some pictures, so I have posted some of the hair pictures that I took of my hair between November 2008 and January 2009.

Each time I see my stylist I ask her to give me a good cut or trim depending on what the ends look like, but once the hair starts growing in, the hair tends to look uneven at the back, also one side tends to grows longer than the other, apparently this has something to do with the way I sleep.

Both of the phones I used to take the pictures only have 2 megapixel cameras so the pictures are not the best and my digital camera is playing up.

Anyway, here are the pictures....

In this picture, the hair has been blow dried with a liquid leave-in, probably diluted Infusium 23, but there is no oil on it yet. Infusium 23 is pretty good at giving the hair a smooth appearance.

In both of these pictures you can see the curly roots of my hair and the new growth at the bottom. Once I start to get new growth the hair almost doubles in volume and becomes a lot thicker. Once relaxed it tends to look very flat for the first few weeks. I now use Luster's Designer Touch Lye Relaxer every two months approximately and I always get a trim or cut each time I see my stylist because split and raggedy ends do not look good and they cause the hair to tangle too.

Designer Touch have two types of relaxer, no lye (sensitive scalp) and lye. I use the lye relaxer. An easy way to tell which is which is to remember that lye relaxer does not need any mixing, but no lye relaxer needs mixing to activate it, although I have seen at least one no lye relaxer that does not have to be mixed. Also, I find that no lye tends to make my hair feel dry but the lye does not, but each to their own because some people use the no lye and are extremely happy with it. I guess it all boils down to your hair type.

Hair picture November 2008
(Blow dried)

In this picture I think my hair has just been relaxed or maybe it has been wrapped or flat ironed after I washed it myself. It definitely has some oil in it. I started using Jennifer Myers oil on my hair as well as the Dabur Vatika oil. They both make the hair extremely smooth and glossy looking but the hair is not greasy or weighed down and still has movement.

Picture of my hair fried, dyed and texturised. It was pretty damaged in this picture as I had dyed it with some kind of permanent dye, which dried out the hair. I had to deep condition it every week to get it to look like this. The original colour was not so nice so I had to dye it with non-chemical powder hair dye in jet black until it all grew out. I used Sta sof fro permanent powder hair dye in jet black. The colour was too dark though. I took this picture in 2004.

The hair should be thicker, but I have a big bald patch on the left hand side due to work stress. Thankfully, it is at the nape/back so can be covered over with the rest of the hair so it doesn't show much now. I have about an inch of hair growth in that area.

All I have in it is the Soft and Beautiful Extend a perm thermal straightening conditioner but I decided to let the hair air dry in a plaited ponytail instead of blow dry. Besides, I couldn't find the blowdryer.

No, that is not a hickey on my neck, I have a rash that appeared from nowhere.

Croc Odor - Great for neutralising bad odours and smells in your fridge fast

The fridge can pick up a number of nasty odours and funky smells especially if you have a number of different foods and snacks inside. So this is where Croc Odor comes in, apparently it means “eating the odour”, from a french derived word.

Once upon a time there were Kleeneze and Betterware representatuves who used to bring their books round and inside there were a few items sold with air vents, which you could fill with bicarbonate of soda, apparently this helped to get rid of the smell of food in the fridge and keep it smelling fresh and odour-free.

I have quite a sensitive nose and tend to pick up bad smells very quickly so I cannot stand bad smells or odours. I
noticed that when raw onion is stored in a container in the fridge it tends to make everything smell funky. There are also a number of items that give the fridge a bad smell such as strawberries, meat, raw or cooked fish, beans and a few other things I have noticed.

So, I was shopping yesterday for a few bits and pieces when I saw the Croc odor fridge odour neutraliser hanging along one of the aisles. I immediately picked up two of them in order to trial the product.

Well, barely half an hour in the fridge and all the smells of food have been neutralised. Now when you open the fridge the smell is no longer there. Also, the weather is hot so this does not help matters at all. The best part of the Croc odor is that it has no scent or smell. It has a gel like consistency and is green in colour. You can tell when it is finished as the gel just disappears once it is dispersed in the fridge over time.

I also recommend cleaning the fridge as this helps to keep out germs and bacteria but generally certain foods just have a bad smell especially if they are in an enclosed space.

It is just a gel like product with seaweed extract in it. The croc odor is quite small and reminds me of one of those little toilet block things you put in a cage and hang around the toilet bowl. The design or style is similar anyway. It has a little sticker on it which is a temperature sensor designed to let you know if the temperature in your fridge is cold enough and safe.
